Insurance for offshore energy contractors

Qdos provide a range of insurance products for contractors in the energy sector, whether working on an oil rig, or offshore wind platform/substation, including rope access work. We have negotiated extremely competitive rates with insurers including no inflated rates for working offshore in comparison to onshore and are confident that our premiums are amongst the lowest in the market for offshore contractor insurance.

Offshore liability insurance

Nearly all offshore energy sector contractors will be required to hold Public and Employers Liability insurance as a stipulation of their contracts.

The offshore working environment is highly specialised and, consequentially, many insurers charge incredibly high premiums. Qdos have negotiated extremely competitive rates with insurers for energy sector contractors, as well as providing insurance to high risk areas such as rope access and rigging.

£5million Public Liability policies are offered as standard for those operating offshore in the energy sector, with the option to increase to £10million. Please refer to your contract and assess your risk before purchasing. Qdos energy sector liability policies also include liability assumed hold harmless agreements and will waive subrogation rights as standard. For full details please see Extension 7 ‘Oil/Gas Industry Contract Conditions’ within the policy wording.

We can cover a wide range of trades in the energy sector, whether you are working in oil and gas or renewables (subject to application). We have provided some examples of trades covered but these are not exclusive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every business is different, and so in order to determine the products you need, you should assess the risks you face as a limited company contractor operating offshore in the energy sector. You may also wish to consider the following when choosing your offshore contractor insurance:

  • Your end client or agency may expect a particular level of indemnity from your cover, so you should check any contractual requirements.
  • If you are not the sole employee of your business, even if you simply hire a spouse to do the books, you may be legally obliged to hold employers liability insurance.

The majority of offshore contractors purchase Public and Employers Liability insurance. Other popular policies for the industry include Contractor's All Risk, Personal Accident, Professional Indemnity, Tax Insurance, and Contractor Sickness Cover. Click here to see why 57% of Personal Accident policyholders work in the energy sector.

If you are working both onshore and offshore in the energy sector, please select the Offshore/Site option as this will cover you for both areas.

If, however, your trade is only partially involved with the energy sector e.g., an electrical contractor working both on oil rigs and as a domestic electrician, it is best to contact the customer service team with a description of your services, so we can ensure you are adequately covered.

We provide a selection of example trades in the quote process however our cover is not exclusive to these options. Please select 'Other' in the secondary list and proceed should none apply to you.

If you are operating offshore in the energy sector and can successfully complete the application, your policy will cover you (subject to the terms and conditions of the policy wording).

Should your application refer, simply complete the registration process or contact a member of the customer service team. It is likely we require some further information of the nature of your business to assess your application - the more information you can provide, the better our customer service agents can assist you.
