Insurance for limited company contractors

Limited company insurance gives you that peace of mind feeling that you can keep trading should legal action be brought against your ltd company, or in the event of an unforeseen incident.

There are a variety of insurance policies for ltd company contractors, from Professional Indemnity to Public Liability, and legal expenses cover to IR35 insurance (which we introduced to the market back in 2000!). As the UK’s leading contractor insurance specialists, we’re here to help you get the cover you need to protect your business.

With Qdos, you get more than award-winning insurance cover too. Limited company contractors benefit from an IR35 Contract Assessment provided free of charge with most policies, so you can make sure you start your contract on the right foot. You also get access to our in-house team of IR35 experts.

What insurances do you need as a limited company contractor?

When considering the right insurance for your ltd company, you should answer the following questions:

  • Are you legally required to hold insurance? Most business insurances are not legally required, however, if you operate a limited company with employees (excluding a sole director), you may be legally required to hold Employers Liability Insurance.

  • Are you contractually obligated to hold insurance? In most cases, a written contract will be in place between your business and your client or agency. It’s important to review these terms for any clauses that discuss liability and therefore indicate a need for insurance cover. Your contract may even specify particular levels of insurance cover.

  • Are you a member of a trade body or professional association? Some trade bodies and associations, such as those for bookkeepers and solicitors, will require that their members hold certain insurances.

  • Which risks are you subject to with your type of work? Depending on the services you provide, you may be at greater risk of certain claims than others. An interim manager, for example, would be at greater risk of a Professional Indemnity insurance claim than a plumber. Whilst a plumber would be at greater risk of a Public Liability claim. You should consider the day-to-day risks that come with your work and personal circumstances. Please get in touch with our team if you’re unsure about the policies that might be right for you.

  • How would you manage financially if the worst happens? For some risks, it is a matter of your own circumstances. If you were called to jury service or had an accident that resulted in you being unable to work for a period of time, would you need financial support? If the answer is yes, then you might wish to consider an insurance policy to protect you.
